1. Create fitness goals

You are building the home gym because you have fitness goals, you just might not be aware of what they are. Chances are though, you know that you want to reach or maintain a certain body type and so your goals are already set.

When you know what they are you’ll be able to pick and choose the type of equipment you’ll need later on. You’ll also have a better sense of direction when doing your research.

2. Form a budget

What can you spend on a home gym? Be honest. Start off with what you already pay in gym membership fees, if you do. That expense will just end up being redirected. Don’t be afraid to set a tight budget though because there is no rule or necessity for your gym to be lavish or expensive, nor do you need enough equipment to fill a basement.

Once you know what you can spend the rest of the process will start falling into place.

3. Access space availability

If money is no object then space probably isn’t a restriction either. Just build a new room if needed, right? Assuming your pockets aren’t overflowing just yet that probably isn’t the case. Instead you have to see hat space you have as is.

The basement is the best place to start for most people, but you may end up having to restrict yourself to a certain part of a bedroom. While out of the way and large is ideal, you can only make do with what you have. Once you know the limitations, you’ll be able to approach the step of picking out equipment a lot more sensibly.

4. Read up on the latest home gym equipment

You’re not going to start off by buying what you saw at your other gym. The place you have a membership to is buying stuff that’s not only out of the typical price range but also far out of the realm of in-home necessity and practicality. Instead, go online and read about the latest equipment and technology, and then reviews about what experts think about those machines.

Of course you still have a budget to be concerned with but you will worry about then in the next step. For now you just want to know what’s out there.

5. Start trying and buying

With the knowledge of what equipment you want, you can now go out and start getting it. If your budget is tight, the research you’ve just done will help you know where you can and can’t compromise. The most important thing with this step though is to actually use it once you’ve bought it!

6. You can build your home gym slowly

This step may or may not apply to you, but remember that if you couldn’t afford everything you wanted in step five, it doesn’t mean you can’t have the type of home gym you want. Just pick out equipment piece by piece, a little now and a little later.
