The Zone Diet

The zone diet is branded as a fad diet and it was created by Barry Sears a biochemist. 

In actual fact it’s not a fad diet in that it’s not planned to only be consumed in short periods, but rather to become the normal eating habits for a person in everyday life.

It has been branded a low carbohydrate diet, however it’s based more on balancing your hormones and therefore does not restrict the intake of carbohydrates as much as other low carbohydrate diets such as the Atkins diet. You can read about that here.

The basics of this diet is a proportion of calories from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. There has been non scientific research conducted by various TV shows which have shown that the diet can certainly produce moderate weight-reduction.

Actually, some of this non scientific research has shown that people actually gain muscle mass while reducing weight on this diet. With no fat being stored, and with stored fat being burnt as energy, the body starts to lose weight.  As the diet progressed  Sears added an Omega three as well as Omega six fatty acids to the zone diet, from supplements such as pharmaceutical fish oils.

The normal zone diet meal was explained by its inventor using the following description. In each meal consume sufficient  protein to fit in the palm of one’s hand, as much non-starchy raw vegetables as you can eat, with enough carbohydrates to help keep mental clarity, with enough oils to stop your hunger.

Are There Any Benefits Or Drawbacks

There is a famous weight loss case that the zone diet can boast about, this is about a man who weighed over 1200 pounds. He went on the diet and in only two years it’s claimed that he had lost nearly 1/3 of his body weight, before this he had even tried liposuction that had nearly been fatal as every other diet he had tried  failed.

The man’s current diet is broken up into six meals per day and consists of 2000 calories . It includes fish, fresh salads, egg white omelet’s, chicken and a variety of other healthy foods suggested by the zone diet.
